![]() This also meant writing in a way that doesn't prescribe how events would turn out because of course, folks in the 15th century had no idea what was going to happen. ![]() In this episode, we explore Andrew's rationale for producing a bicultural series of novels and choosing historical fiction over historical nonfiction in order to bring to life the context thought processes and perspectives of people present at the time in the 15th century. Andrew caught our attention back in 2017 for his book encounters, "Unforeseen 1492 Retold", which rather than another single sided story is a bicultural retelling that portrays the life stories of both Columbus and the Taíno chieftains from their youth to their encounters during the invasions of 1492.Īndrew is back to talk about the sequel "Columbus and Caonabó 1493 to 1498 Retold". So today I am super excited to have author Andrew Rowen back on the podcast. One of the most poignant examples of this is the "discovery" of the new world by Christopher Columbus. It's a common truism that history is often written by the victors, but it is equally true that the actual story is more complicated. ![]()

6/4/2023 0 Comments Innocence by Suki Fleet![]() ![]() But when events threaten to tear them apart, it is Romeo who must find the strength within himself to help Julian (and not let their love story turn into a Shakespearean tragedy).Īs I teased in my review for Innocence earlier this week, Suki Fleet has captured me heart and soul with her storytelling. This is the story of their struggle to find a way off the streets and stay together at all costs. But living as they do is slowly destroying him, and he begins to doubt he can be strong enough. Taking care of Romeo changes him, gives him a purpose in life, gives him hope, and he tries to be strong and keep his troubles with drugs behind him. A runaway from an abusive home, he has had to make some difficult choices and sells himself on the street to survive. ![]() ![]() Julian is barely two years older than Romeo. Mute and terrified, his silence makes him vulnerable, and one night he is beaten by a gang of other kids, only to be rescued by a boy who pledges to take care of him. When fifteen-year-old Romeo’s mother leaves one day and doesn’t return, he finds himself homeless and trying to survive on the streets. **CRUSH ALERT** REVIEW: “This is Not a Love Story” by Suki Fleet **CRUSH ALERT** on author Suki Fleet for her haunting, unforgettable prose, and on main character Romeo for never, ever giving up. ![]() 6/4/2023 0 Comments The Holders by Julianna Scott![]() ![]() Surprise that will change what they thought they knew about themselves and ![]() However, they are all–especially Becca–in for a Little they piece together the information of their family’s heritage, theirĮstranged Father, and the legend of the Holder race that decrees Ryland is the Brigid’s is a world beyond their imagination. ![]() Skeptical, Becca agrees to do what’s best for Ryland. Examining the ancient poetry and myths found in African, Latin American, and Caribbean culture, Gates uncovers a unique system for interpretation and a powerful vernacular tradition that black slaves brought with them to the New World. It elaborates a new critical approach located within this tradition that allows the black voice to speak for itself. Hailed in The New York Times Book Review as "eclectic, exciting, convincing, provocative" and in The Washington Post Book World as "brilliantly original," Henry Louis Gates, Jr.’s The Signifying Monkey is a groundbreaking work that illuminates the relationship between the African and African-American vernacular traditions and black literature. ![]() ![]() What sites your reviews are posted on (B&N, Amazon, etc.) and whether you send digital (eBook, PDF, Word, etc.) or hard copies of your books to each other for review is up to you. But let the word atmosphere be taken literally to mean that Chekhov has contrived to shed over us a luminous vapor in which life appears as it is, without veils, transparent and visible to the depths. And, given time, something might be said in greater detail of the causes which produced this atmosphere-the strange dislocated sentences, each so erratic and yet cutting out the shape so firmly, of the realism, of the humor, of the artistic unity. It is, as a rule, when a critic does not wish to commit himself or to trouble himself, that he refers to atmosphere. ![]() ![]() ![]() Analysis of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard ![]() ![]() It’s about how much we are needed and how well we take care of other people. ![]() It isn’t merely a function of status or hierarchy, either.
